Online Workshops

AFGU logoAFGU Online Workshops are taking place throughout the year! Click here to apply.

planet clay activityWe are now offering a number of online workshops for informal educators across the country. Scroll down to learn more, including how to apply.

I. What You'll Learn

You will receive training on how to lead a number of hands-on activities covering three major themes in astronomy: Light & Color, How Big?/How Far?, and Change in the Universe. You will also learn other fun techniques to present astronomy topics and to interpret current astronomical events and discoveries.

II. How You'll Learn

Along with 19-24 other informal science educators, you'll be asked to review some brief reading materials and online videos, do observations and activities at your place of work (using materials from the AFGU Toolkit), report back (through a variety of online forums), and "meet" for phone and online discussions/chats with your fellow participants and the AFGU team. Throughout the workshop, you'll also be supported in a variety of ways, including the ability to converse one-on-one with AFGU educators and presenters during scheduled office hours.

III. Required Time Commitment and Available Resources

The time commitment is about 6 hours per week for four weeks. Focus is on
the three major themes in astronomy highlighted in the AFGU Toolkit: Light & Color, How Big?/How Far?, and Change in the Universe. But the experience doesn't end there. Following the workshop, we'll provide you with even more opportunities for continued learning. You'll join (at your own pace) the AFGU online community where you'll receive, among other things, a monthly newsletter, alerts about upcoming astronomical events (including ideas for relevant activities at your institution), notices of live "videochats" (where you can meet with experts and fellow educators), and updates on newly available resources. By logging your own astronomy programs and activities, you'll also be eligible for monthly drawings for additional free materials.

IV. What You'll Need

  • A completed application (including the required Institutional Endorsement Form)
  • The ability to try/implement new astronomy programming at your institution
  • A high-speed Internet connection and computer speakers so you can participate in live videochats
