The
Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP), is pleased to announce
the appointment of Scott W. Roberts to a vacant position on the
Board of Directors. The ASP, established in 1889, is an international
nonprofit organization dedicated to increase the public's
understanding and appreciation of astronomy through scientists,
educators, enthusiasts and the public as a vehicle for advancing
science literacy and exchange.
Roberts
is the Vice President for Global Client Support and Community Relations
at Meade Instruments Corporation and also serves as the Executive
Director of the Meade 4M Community, an alliance of astronomy and
space exploration organizations and enthusiasts, with members spanning
the globe. Roberts has an extensive background in astronomy public
outreach, including service as a Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)
Solar System Ambassador and founding the AstronomyOutreach network,
a group to promote and support outreach enthusiasts, organizations,
lecturers, clubs, and events for public awareness of astronomy.
Most
recently, Roberts contributed to the Astronomical Society of the
Pacific's book "Science Educators Under the Stars," one
of the first publications devoted to education and public outreach
in astronomy by amateur astronomers. Roberts is also on the Boards
of Directors of the National Sharing the Sky Foundation and Astronomers
Without Borders. He is the father of four children and lives with
his wife in Orange County, California.
Dr.
James B. Kaler, President of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific
Board of Directors stated, "We are most pleased to have Scott
join the ASP Board, for he brings an important perspective to the
Society based on his many years of service to the astronomy community."
James
G. Manning, Executive Director for the Astronomical Society of the
Pacific commented, "Scott's business experience, prior
leadership with nonprofit organizations, and dedication to astronomy
education and public outreach makes him a wonderful addition to
our Board as we continue with our mission-based programs and activities
that advance science literacy through engagement in astronomy."
Scott
Roberts remarked, "I am very pleased and honored to serve
on the Board of Trustees for the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.
This venerable institution has supported astronomy awareness for
well over a century and has inspired untold numbers of people to
explore and discover the universe for themselves. I hope that I
am able to promote the activities of the ASP and awareness of the
vision and mission of this organization during, and long after my
tenure. I wish to thank everyone on the Board for their faith and
support."
