X-WR-CALDESC:Join the NASA Night Sky Network on Tuesday\, September 21 at 6
:00pm Pacific Time (9:00pm Eastern) to hear Dr. Paul Abell share with us p
lans for the DART mission to demonstrate a technique to change the motion
of an asteroid in space.\n\nThis presentation will provide some background
on potentially hazardous asteroids\, recent Earth impacts\, and NASA’s ac
tivities to help protect Earth from asteroids. The presentation will descr
ibe NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission as well as shar
e information on the European Space Agency’s (ESAs) Hera mission. DART wil
l be the first demonstration of the kinetic impactor technique to change t
he motion of an asteroid in space. \n\n-----------------------------------
-------\n\nAbout Dr. Paul Abell\nDr. Paul Abell is the Chief Scientist for
Small Body Exploration within the Astromaterials Research and Exploration
Science Division at the Johnson Space Center. His main areas of interest
are physical characterization of near-Earth objects (NEOs) via ground-base
d and spacecraft observations\, examination of NEOs for future robotic and
human exploration\, and identification of potential resources within the
NEO population for future in situ utilization. Abell has been studying pot
entially hazardous asteroids and near-Earth objects for over 15 years and
is an investigation team member on NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test
(DART) mission.\n\nRegistration\nNight Sky Network members can pregister
for this webinar through the event’s Outreach Resource page (login require
d).\nFurther Information and Additional Viewing Options\n\nThe event will
also be streaming live on YouTube\, but please note that questions asked o
ver the NSN-members-only Zoom Q&A will be prioritized.\n\nThe recording wi
ll be uploaded both to the webinar’s resource page and to the NSN YouTube
page for folks that are unable to attend this evening’s session.
