X-WR-CALDESC:Join the NASA Night Sky Network on Tuesday\, January 28\, 2025
\, at 6:00 PM Pacific Time (9:00 PM Eastern) along with Dr. Michael Seiffe
rt where we’ll discuss the Euclid space telescope and the search for dark
energy and dark matter.\n\nEuclid is a new European Space Agency space tel
escope with NASA contributions designed to provide new insights into the n
ature of dark matter and why the universe is expanding at an accelerating
rate. The term “dark energy” has been given to refer to the unknown cause
of this accelerated expansion. Over the course of six years\, Euclid will
build a sky map covering over one-third of the sky out to distances over 1
0 billion light-years. This map will be used to probe the large-scale stru
cture of the universe\, measure the properties of dark matter and dark ene
rgy\, and test Einstein’s theory of gravity. Along the way\, we will be ga
thering detailed information on over a billion distant galaxies\, as well
as providing new views of astronomical objects much closer to home. The t
alk will describe the Euclid mission\, its goals\, and some of the early s
cientific results.\n\nAbout Michael Seiffert:\n\nDr. Michael Seiffert has
worked as a research scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the la
st 25 years and currently serves as the project scientist for the NASA con
tribution to Euclid. His research interests include developing new astron
omical instruments and using them to learn about our universe.\n\n
