X-WR-CALDESC:Registration closes Sunday\, 3/2 at 11:59pm Pacific Time\n\nIn
this 90-minute workshop classroom and informal educators will explore the
evidence for the Big Bang\, its place in the NGSS\, and learn how to iden
tify and respond to common objections and misconceptions.\n\n In this sess
ion\, educators from the Astronomical Society of the Pacific will explore
the evidence for the Big Bang\, and how it can serve as a model for engagi
ng students in an NGSS storyline focusing on evidence. Participants will
learn about using the Big Bang to teach about the nature of science\, and
responding respectfully and thoughtfully to student objections. Through g
roup discussions\, the session will examine common misconceptions\, potent
ial objections\, what the science shows and how to use the objections as t
eachable moments about the nature of science. Teaching the NGSS context u
sing science practices\, and crosscutting concepts will support student un
derstanding of evidence-based arguments for this important theory. \n\nPar
ticipants will gain the following through participation in the workshop:\n
\n A basic understanding of the history of scientific investigations le
ading up to the current evolutionary model of the universe.\n Participa
nts will take away ideas through peer discussion for how to address common
misconceptions about the evolutionary model of the universe.\n Strateg
ies we have found to successful at engaging learners of all ages\n Acce
ss to astronomy experts who will facilitate the workshop\n A free 6 mon
th subscription to Mercury magazine online\n A certificate of completio
n for participating in two clock hours of professional development.\n\nReg
