\nABOUT THE LECTURE \n\nTwo eclipses of the Sun are coming to North Americ
a during the 2023-24 school year – an annular (“ring of fire”) eclipse Oct
. 14\, 2023 and a total eclipse Apr. 8\, 2024. People in two narrow paths
will have the full eclipse experience each time. Everyone else (an estima
ted 500 million people\, including all of us in the Bay Area) will see a n
ice partial eclipse\, where the Moon covers a good part of the Sun. The ta
lk will describe how eclipses come to be (and why they are total only on E
arth)\, what scientists learn during eclipses\, exactly when and where the
eclipses of 2023 and 2024 will be best visible\, and how to observe the e
clipses and the Sun safely. \n\nABOUT ANDREW FRAKNOI\n\nAndrew Fraknoi r
etired a few years ago as the chair of the astronomy department at Foothil
l College and still teaches short\, noncredit courses on astronomy at the
University of San Francisco and SF State. He is the co-author of Solar Sc
 ience: Exploring Sunspots\, Seasons\, Eclipses\, and More\, a book for edu
cators\, and When the Sun Goes Dark\, a book for children. He appears regu
larly on local and national radio\, explaining astronomical developments i
n everyday language\, and was named California Professor of the Year in 20
 07. With several colleagues\, he is leading the effort to distribute 5 mi
