X-WR-CALDESC:The Silicon Valley Lectures Series - YouTube Livestream\n\n\nO
 n Wednesday\, Apr. 17th\, 2024 at 7 pm (PDT)\, Dr. Paul Halpern (St. Joesp
 h’s University) will give a free\, illustrated\, non-technical lecture ent
itled:\n\n“The Allure of the Multiverse: Beyond the Limits of Direct Obser
vation'\n\nThe talk is part of the Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series
\, now in its 24th year. \n\nAbout the Talk:\nGiven that the extent of th
e observable universe has yet to be mapped out\, some might wonder why som
e physicists have introduced the concept of a multiverse into their models
. This talk will examine why some eminent physicists\, such as the late N
obel laureate Steven Weinberg\, have been attracted to the idea of the mul
tiverse\, and others\, such as Princeton cosmologist Paul Steinhardt\, hav
e raised significant concerns. We’ll also show that the cultural (think M
arvel movies) and scientific ideas of multiverses differ significantly.\n
\n \nAbout the Speaker:\nPaul Halpern is Professor of Physics at Saint Jos
eph’s University and the author of eighteen popular science books. The rec
ipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a Fulbright Scholarship\, and an Athen
aeum Literary Award\, he has appeared on numerous radio and television sho
ws including 'Future Quest\,' 'Science Friday\,' 'The Simpsons 20th Annive
rsary Special\,' and C-SPAN's 'BookTV.' His most recent book is “The Allu
re of the Multiverse: Extra Dimensions\, Other Worlds\, and Parallel Unive
rses\,” just published by Basic Books.\n\n--------------------------------
 ---------------------------------------------------\n\nThis presentation w
ill be a Virtual Livestream event due to the remodeling of the Smithwick T
heater at Foothill College. \n\nThe lecture is co-sponsored by: \n\n* Foo
thill College Science\, Tech\, Engineering & Math Division \n* SETI Insti
tute \n* Astronomical Society of the Pacific \n
