X-WR-CALDESC:This workshop was on 9/23 and has been moved out to 9/30. \n\n
Join Tony Smith\, ASP's Online Learning Program Specialist\, and Shanil Vi
 rani\, ASP's Cosmic Engagement Specialist on September 23\, 2025 for a Lea
rn@ ASP Online Workshop - Astrology and Astronomy: Using the Night Sky to
Teach Scientific Reasoning.\n\nAstrology and astronomy once shared a commo
n sky — rooted in observation\, wonder\, and the human drive to understand
the cosmos. Over time\, however\, they diverged: astronomy became a data-
driven science\, while astrology evolved into a symbolic and cultural prac
tice. In this 2 hour workshop\, participants will explore that historical
split not to dismiss\, but to engage in a respectful\, evidence-based dial
ogue that models how to teach scientific reasoning with empathy and rigor.
\n\nEducators will gain tools to help students critically examine what mak
es a claim scientific\, distinguish science from pseudoscience\, and refle
ct on the role of evidence\, testability\, and revision in the scientific
process. Participants will walk away with NGSS-supportive strategies\, cla
ssroom-ready activities\, and the confidence to navigate complex conversat
ions about science\, belief\, and the nature of knowing — all through the
lens of the night sky.\n\nIdeal for high school and general education coll
ege instructors.\n\nThis workshop takes place in one 2 hour session.\n\nPa
rticipants will gain the following through participation in the workshop:
\n\n Tools to confidently teach the difference between science and pseu
doscience using NGSS-aligned strategies.\n Historical and conceptual co
ntext to explore the shared origins and modern divergence of astrology and
astronomy.\n Ready-to-use classroom activities and discussion prompts
that promote critical thinking and scientific reasoning.\n Access to as
tronomy education experts and peer educators for discussion\, Q&A\, and in
structional support.\n A certificate of completion for 2 hours of profe
ssional development through the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.\n\nRe
gistration: $40\n\nAttendance/Refund Policy\n\nLive attendance is strongly
encouraged and expected in order to get the most out of the interactive s
ession. A recording will be available for those who cannot attend live or
