Learn@ ASP Online Workshop - Color Our Universe: Hands-On Astronomy for Summer Reading Programs

Interactive Workshop: Wednesday, May 21, 2025 3pm-4:30 PT / 6pm - 7:30pm ET
FREE Registration is required for this workshop

Join Vivian White, ASP's Director of Free Choice Learning, on May 21 for a Learn@ ASP Online Workshop - Color Our Universe: Hands-On Astronomy for Summer Reading Programs

Find out how astronomers use color and filters to learn about our universe. Using only printed materials and your cell phone, explore how filters work and how astronomers use representational color to better understand objects they observe. This simple, hands-on activity can provide minutes or an hour of exploration, depending on its use. You don’t have to be an expert in astronomy to ask the right questions and guide patrons on their journey of understanding light and color.

Use the activity as a lightly facilitated table-top exploration or bring a larger audience along for a slide presentation that is actually interactive. A few simple materials will have patrons creating their own filter images and secret messages. Printouts are offered in both English and Spanish.

This interactive workshop is one hour long, followed by 30 minutes for Q&A.

Participants will gain the following through participation in the workshop:

-Understanding of light and color as they relate to astronomy

-Practical strategies for facilitating hands-on activities at your library

-Strategies for successful engagement of patrons as they explore light and filters

- A certificate of completion for participating in 2 clock hours of professional development.

Registration: FREE, but registration is required.
