What If Your Telescope Could Do More Than Capture Beautiful Images?
What if it could reveal the hidden physics of the universe — what colors, shapes, and brightness actually mean — and how your observations can contribute to real scientific discovery?
Master Your Unistellar Telescope & Do Science That Matters is a five-part workshop for Unistellar users who want to move beyond imaging into true scientific observing.
This course is presented by the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, in partnership with Unistellar and the SETI Institute.
You’ll learn what you’re seeing, why it matters, and how your telescope becomes a genuine scientific instrument.
“This workshop finally helped me understand what my Unistellar images mean. For the first time, I could interpret color, brightness, and structure like a scientist.”
— Astro 101 participant
⸻
What You’ll Learn
Across five interactive sessions, astronomers from the ASP, Unistellar, and SETI will guide you through the essential skills of scientific observing:
- How astronomers use light to decode the universe
- What colors, shapes, and brightness reveal about stellar evolution
- How to analyze your telescope’s data using beginner-friendly tools
- How to detect variable stars, exoplanet transits, and transient events
- How to contribute meaningful observations to active campaigns
Using Julia and Pluto notebooks — the same modern tools astronomers use — you’ll analyze real Unistellar FITS files and quantify your observations like a scientist.
“Working with Pluto notebooks was eye-opening. I never imagined I’d be able to make my own light curve — now I can.”
— Astro 101 participant
You won’t just learn how to use your telescope — you’ll learn how to use it in ways that matter.
⸻
By the End of the Series, You Will Be Able To…
- Confidently operate your Unistellar telescope as a scientific tool
- Identify and interpret features in your astronomical images
- Build and analyze light curves of variable stars and exoplanet transits
- Understand deep-sky objects as evidence of cosmic evolution
- Participate in coordinated observing campaigns
- Contribute real data to ongoing research projects
“This was the most educational and scientifically grounded workshop I’ve taken as a Unistellar user. I now know how to do real science with my telescope.”
— Astro 101 participant
You will walk away not just with new skills, but with a deeper understanding of the universe — and your place in uncovering it.

Schedule & Format
Starts Wednesday, January 21, 2026 at 2pm ET
Sessions are held bi-weekly, live on Zoom, and recorded for flexible access.
Registered participants also receive exclusive access to a private Unistellar Slack channel — a vibrant community where you can ask questions, share discoveries, troubleshoot observations, and engage directly with instructors.
You’ll also have access to weekly office hours with two professional astronomers for personalized support on:
- Data analysis
- Observing strategy
- Understanding celestial targets
- Telescope performance and technique
“Slack and office hours were game-changers. Whenever I got stuck, help was immediate — and that made all the difference.”
— Astro 101 participant
Participants in the first cohort who engaged in Slack and office hours reported significantly higher learning gains and satisfaction.
This combination of live instruction + community support + mentorship creates a learning environment unlike anything else in amateur astronomy.
