"Getting Started with Community Engagement and Activism"
This workshop will help you move beyond individual action and use your role as an astronomer and educator to proactively engage members of your organization and community in climate change learning and activism. I will provide brief examples of my efforts to engage the general public, K-12 teachers, my campus community, and my state legislators and members of Congress, all from within my professional role. However, these examples rely heavily on the unique landscape of my community. Therefore, the bulk of this workshop will be used to help you identify your unique set of opportunities and key stakeholders. In breakout groups, we will brainstorm methods of engagement that both leverage your role as an astronomer and lead to meaningful action on climate change. We will draw from a variety of climate change communication and activism resources to help you make an action plan for moving forward.
